UPDATE: Cobourg man, 57, charged after alleged dog bite incident

Cobourg police say a local man has been charged after an alleged dog bite incident, and the dog involved is in quarantine.
According to the Cobourg Police Service, back on Sept. 1, 2026, at about 12:30 p.m., police responded to the Elgin Street West and William Street area after receiving a report that a dog had bitten an adult.
“The victim was transported to hospital for treatment of their injuries,” said police, who did not specify the extent of injuries.
Through investigation, police said they identified the dog’s owner and determined “there had been previous documented incidents involving the animal.”
As a result of the probe, on Sept. 3, police said a 57-year-old Cobourg man was arrested and charged with criminal negligence causing bodily harm.
This charge has not been proven in court.
Initially, after confirming the charge at the end of last week, police reported officers and municipal law enforcement were continuing to attempt to locate the dog, which was described as “a large white dogo Argentino” breed.
Police had also put out a call for the public’s help at this time, asking if people seen the dog around to reach out to the service – but urged people not to approach the animal and maintain a safe distance.
On Tuesday, Sept. 8, the service issued an update on its investigation, noting the dog was found by police over the weekend (on Sept. 5) and then turned over to municipal law enforcement.
“The dog is currently in quarantine, and the municipal law enforcement investigation is ongoing,” said police, on Tuesday, while thanking the public for its help with their investigation.
No other details were available at press deadline.
