Car enthusiasts share their passion with peopleCare residents

Beautiful weather provided the perfect backdrop for the car show at peopleCare in Tavistock. Residents gathered to admire the cars, listen to music and visit with one another.

Maurice Sauder recently moved to peopleCare Tavistock and the idea for the car show came soon after. His son, Maury Sauder, would often visit, making the trip from Stratford in his 1929 Model A Ford pickup.

Conversations about Sauder’s unique vehicle led to the idea of organizing a car show for peopleCare residents.

Sauder made a few phone calls and contacted fellow car enthusiast Mark Bryan, who made a few more calls. The effort resulted in 27 cars being brought together for the event.

The car show was held this past Monday and was planned to coincide with the Food Truck Night held at Grace United Church each Monday evening throughout the summer.

Sauder collaborated with peopleCare director of programs Kristen Leenders, who helped promote and coordinate the event.

Sauder has been involved with cars for many years. He took a course on building hot rods with Gerry Nafzinger of Kitchener.

“Five people that I took the course with are here tonight,” said Sauder.

Sauder put the skills he learned in the course to good use after a tree fell on the rear end of his 1930 Ford Model A. He rebuilt the vehicle into a 1929 pickup truck.

Though Sauder doesn’t consider it a show car, he does enjoy driving it to Tavistock to visit his father and taking drives with his wife and treating her to ice cream. He also enjoys attending car shows.

Kyle Ford also enjoys attending car shows with his 2015 Toyota GT86. Ford plans to attend the upcoming car show at Sprucelodge in Stratford on Sept. 9, and on Sept. 16, he will participate in the car show at Hillside Manor, where he works. He is looking forward to sharing his love of cars with the residents there.

The evening was a great success with an excellent turnout. The event gave peopleCare residents a chance to enjoy some beautiful vehicles while spending time with family, friends and members of the local car community.
