County of Brant Mayor David Bailey says he will not seek re-election this fall, bringing an end to what will be eight years in the municipality’s top elected office.
Bailey made the announcement in a statement released April 21, saying, “It is with a full heart and deep gratitude that I share that I will not be seeking a third term as Mayor of the County of Brant.”
“Eight years feels like the right time for a transition. I’ve given this role everything I have, and I’m proud of what we’ve accomplished together. I also believe it’s healthy for any organization to welcome new energy and new leadership,” he said.
Bailey, a St. George businessman with a long history of community service, was first elected mayor in 2018, defeating longtime mayor Ron Eddy, who had held the position since 1999. Bailey received 4,478 votes to Eddy’s 3,156.
Reflecting on his time in office, Bailey pointed to the importance of connecting with residents as a defining part of the role. “At the end of the day, the most meaningful part of this job wasn’t policy—it was people,” he said. “Taking a call, helping solve a problem, or simply listening when someone needed it.” Known for his strong presence at community events and business openings, Bailey often joked about his willingness to show up anywhere, saying he would “attend the opening of an envelope.” Over his two terms, he built a reputation as an ambassador for the County, frequently welcoming new businesses and engaging directly with constituents.
In his statement, Bailey also highlighted relationships with Six Nations of the Grand River and Mississaugas of the Credit First Nation, calling them “grounded in respect, consistency, and listening,” and noted ongoing work in downtown Paris as a project he believes will bring long-term benefits despite short-term disruption.
“As I look ahead, my focus remains on finishing this term strong and continuing to serve you to the best of my ability,” he said.
The municipal election process is set to begin shortly, with the nomination period opening May 1, 2026. Nomination Day is scheduled for Friday, Aug. 21, with filings accepted between 9 a.m. and 2 p.m. Candidates must also notify the clerk in writing by 2 p.m. that day if they wish to withdraw. Voting Day will take place Monday, Oct. 26, 2026.
The County of Brant will host a Candidate Information Night on Thursday, April 30 at 6 p.m. at the County of Brant Council Chambers, 7 Broadway St. W., Paris, for those considering running in the upcoming election.
Bailey thanked residents, council colleagues, staff and community members for their support over his tenure.
“Serving the County of Brant has been an honour from start to finish,” he said. “It has truly been the privilege of a lifetime to serve as your Mayor. I will always be grateful for the opportunity.”
