Art Expressions exhibition showcases student creativity

Mixed media, acrylic on canvas, oil on canvas, and even paint and marker on shoes are among the works included in the Art Expressions exhibition on display at Lynnwood Arts until Saturday, June 20.

“Art Expressions: A Celebration of Youth Creativity” features the work of local high school students from the Grand Erie District School Board and the Brant Haldimand Norfolk Catholic District School Board.

The exhibition displays artwork created by students from Grades 9 to 12 attending Delhi District Secondary School, Holy Trinity Catholic School, and Valley Heights Secondary School.

As the exhibition’s description notes, the works are “bold, brilliant, and deeply personal,” with pieces reflecting the students’ “unique perspectives, passions, and voices.”

Works include self-portraits, still life, landscapes, and clay sculpture pieces, and show an impressive level of technical competence as well as creativity.

Lynnwood held an opening event for the exhibition on Saturday, May 9. Though curator Chelsea Brant could not attend the opening, Lynnwood’s director Carole Aeschelmann provided some remarks on her behalf.

Brant’s comments praised the artists’ diversity of ideas and willingness to explore a wide range of media. She also noted that the lessons learned through making art extend far beyond the classroom, and encouraged the artists to continue to stay connected to Lynnwood.

Art teachers from each school selected the pieces to be included. Lynnwood’s curator then determined how best to display the pieces for the exhibition.

The Art Expressions exhibition is on display until June 20 at Lynnwood Arts, 21 Lynnwood Avenue, Simcoe. Lynnwood Arts is open Wednesday to Friday 12-4 p.m. and Saturdays 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
