‘An exceptional asset to our team’: New associate medical officer of health

Lakelands Public Health is growing with the appointment of Dr. Maxwell Tran as the health unit’s new associate medical officer of health.
“I am thrilled to join the Lakelands Public Health team,” said Tran. “I look forward to working closely with our amazing staff and with the board of health, municipalities, First Nations, and partners to improve the health of our communities.”
The health unit formally announced Tran’s appointment on Sept. 17, 2026, saying Tran brings a wealth of academic excellence, comprehensive public health training and diverse clinical experience to the region.
“Dr. Tran joins Lakelands following a distinguished academic and professional journey,” said the health unit, in a recent release. “He completed his Doctor of Medicine (MD) and a combined Family Medicine and Public Health and Preventive Medicine (PHPM) residency at the University of Toronto, where he demonstrated exceptional leadership by serving as chief resident for both programs.
“During his residency, he also earned a Master of Public Health (MPH) from Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, Maryland, where he was recognized as a prestigious Sommer Scholar.”
Officials stated that his foundational public health experience also includes extensive hands-on training across Ontario’s public health landscape. As a senior PHPM resident, Tran also completed rotations at multiple public health units, including Halton Region, Peel Public Health, Toronto Public Health, and York Region Public Health, as well as provincially with Public Health Ontario and the Office of the Chief Medical Officer of Health, reads his bio.
“We are incredibly excited to welcome Dr. Tran to Lakelands Public Health,” said Dr. Thomas Piggott, who also serves as medical officer of health/CEO for the health unit. “His outstanding academic background, paired with his extensive hands-on residency experience and deep clinical understanding of both urban and remote communities, makes him an exceptional asset to our team.
“I look forward to working closely alongside him to protect and promote the health of everyone in our region.”
In addition to his public health specialization, Tran reportedly maintains an active clinical practice in family medicine and hospitalist medicine.
This clinical work has taken him across the province, serving diverse patient populations in North York, Parry Sound, Sioux Lookout, and Sandy Lake First Nation, noted the health unit.
“This dual lens of front-line clinical care and population-level health strategy will heavily inform his work protecting and promoting health within Lakelands’ communities.”
