The team of Jim Ahrens, Andy Cunningham, Jeremy Foran and Rob Lemmons shot 17-under-par July 4 to win the St. Marys Golf and Country Club’s (SMGCC) Four-Man Scramble tournament.

The tournament featured 24 foursomes competing in the tournament. According to Cunningham, his team’s success was rooted in their strong play on the greens.

“I think golf scrambles come down to putting,” Cunningham told the Independent. “All four in our group have similar putting styles, and each of us contributed with key putts to keep the momentum going.”

Cunningham added their putting prowess was backed up by strong shooting further up the fairway.

“Of course, the closer you are to the hole, the easier those putts are to make, and we had numerous kick-in birdies throughout the round. Our team is anchored by one of southwestern Ontario’s best amateur golfers in Jeremy (Foran), followed by the big-hitting Jim (Ahrens) from West Haven (Golf and Country Club), and arguably the best putter in St. Marys with a 20 handicap in Rob (Lemmons). I’m just along for the ride.”

Their 17-under-par result was an especially strong finish after a shaky start for the foursome.

“We started on the most difficult hole on the course, the par-three second, and opened with a messy bogey,” said Cunningham. “But we bounced back quickly on the next hole with Jim (Ahrens) making a three for an eagle all on his own. Perhaps the most memorable shot of the tournament came on the par-five 15th where Jeremy (Foran) stuck our second shot to a foot-and-a-half for a tap-in eagle.”

The winners of the A flight was the team of Dan Anderson, Kellen Fifield, Rick Fifield and Matt Hopkins, who won their flight with retrogression after shooting 14-under-par. In the B flight, Peter Csanyi, Steve Csanyi, Steve MacDonald and Kris Whetstone took the top spot with a 12-under-par score.
