Soccer continues to grow in popularity across Perth County and beyond, and Shakespeare is no exception as hundreds of local youth take part in organized sports programs this spring and summer.
With international attention turning toward upcoming World Cup matches in Toronto, Vancouver and other North American cities, interest in the sport continues to increase among young players throughout the region.
Many years ago, members of the Optimist Club of Shakespeare recognized the need for a local soccer field where area youth could play close to home.
Today, the Shakespeare Community Athletic Association (SCAA) continues to organize soccer and softball programs each year to provide local children with opportunities to participate in organized sports.
SCAA member Deb Bell said the association has 11 organized ball teams this season along with a pair of soccer teams and eight learn-to-play programs.
In total, more than 250 youth are participating in organized sports through the association this year.
Volunteers with the SCAA continue to play an important role in organizing leagues, maintaining facilities and ensuring local youth have opportunities to stay active and involved in community sports.
