Your Library Corner: The power of collective joy

In a world that can often feel divided, rushed or disconnected, moments of collective joy matter more than ever.

Collective joy is the happiness we experience together. It happens when people gather to create, learn, celebrate and connect. At Stratford Public Library, we see the power of collective joy every day.

People of all ages and backgrounds come through our doors looking for books, information, technology or a welcoming place to spend time. Children attend story times, teens explore new interests, adults connect through learning and creativity and families create memories together. What they often discover is something more: opportunities to share experiences with others and to be part of something larger than themselves.

Sometimes collective joy is loud and energetic. During Noon Kazoo, participants gather to make music together, filling the library with laughter, creativity and fun. At Chess (K)Nights, players of different ages and skill levels come together around the board, sharing friendly competition, conversation and a love of the game.

Collective joy can also grow through creativity. Through BiblioMake: Socratica, Stratford Public Library's open collective of makers, artists, engineers, designers, writers, poets and everything in between, community members gather to work on projects they care about simply for the love of making. While each person may pursue different interests, there is something special about sharing ideas, encouragement and inspiration with others.

The Library’s Happy Hour events are a celebration of collective joy. Community members gather among the stacks for literary-inspired activities, live music and lively conversation. In the company of one another, participants experience the sense of connection and belonging that lies at the heart of these gatherings.

This summer, the Great Hobbit Adventure invites participants to step into a story that extends beyond the library and into Stratford itself. Families, friends and fellow adventurers become part of a shared narrative, exchanging discoveries and creating memories together. A similar spirit can be found at events like the Swiftie Party, where community members gather around music, creativity, friendship and fun.

Even reading, often thought of as a solitary activity, can become a source of collective joy. Through the STAR Reading Challenge, readers of all ages join a community of participants who are exploring new ideas, discovering new stories and celebrating their accomplishments together.

At its best, Stratford Public Library is more than a collection of books or a calendar of events. It is a gathering place where makers, readers and lifelong learners come together to learn, create, celebrate and connect. It is a place where neighbours become friends, ideas become inspiration and individual experiences become shared ones.

Every conversation, every program and every shared experience helps build a stronger, more connected community. That may be one of the most important things a library provides, not just access to information, but opportunities to experience the simple, powerful joy of being together.
