Invasion of the Dragons a huge success

Waterford is known for its beautiful lakes and waterways and trails and it is the perfect setting for a very special fundraiser. On June 21, hundreds flocked to Waterford for Invasion of the Dragons, a full day of dragon boat racing, and the turnout and support didn’t disappoint.

Shadow Lake, Waterford has been home to the races for several years now and the crowds continue to grow every year. Started about 15 years ago, the event has drawn more and more interest each year and more and more participants.

Gail Catherwood, one of the planners, this year they had about 18 boats.

“We’ve had as many as 24 in the past. The smaller numbers this year meant there was lots of room.”

When planning any outdoor event, you hope for a nice day and good weather and they got it. Organizers were also fortunate to have a good crew of volunteers to help out.

“We partner with the Rotary Club of Norfolk Sunrise to make this all happen. We get six boats and six docks from a company named Alkme and it takes at least 20 volunteers just to help on the floating docks.”

Catherwood explained, “The money raised from the event stays in Norfolk County to help cancer patients through the expenses of cancer. Things like gas, groceries, utilities and parking soon add up so we can offer them some help.”

This year’s event made at least $15,000 and these funds raised will also be shared with the Rotary Club Norfolk Sunrise for their charities.

Catherwood also wanted to give a huge thank you to St. John’s Ambulance.

“They’ve been there for us the last three years in case there is a fall or heat issues. This year we didn’t need them but we are grateful for their time. Thank you as well to Norfolk Disposal for their dumpster to keep the area as clean as we found it. That also was accomplished by the great volunteers.”

Overall, it was a great day for everyone and planning has started for next year. Plan to be there!
