‘In the Line of Fire’ docu-series features Cobourg firefighters, Canadian Fire Fighters Museum

Residents of Cobourg and beyond can get a sense of what it’s like standing “In the Line of Fire” and learn more about the Cobourg Fire Department by tuning into a new six-part docu-series available on Bell Fibe TV1.

From water rescue training to live fire training through the mobile trailer, to riding along in the truck on a call, the series aims to engage viewers through its profile of various members of the Cobourg Fire Department.  

The Town of Cobourg held on Thursday (July 30) at Victoria Hall a launch of the new series, which is now available on Bell Fibe TV Channel 1 and through the Fibe TV app. The free, public event included brief remarks and screenings of three episodes.

The series’ executive producer, Mark Johnston, of Eelay Media, a Cobourg-based production company, shared a few thoughts about the project with the West Northumberland Independent.

“What struck me the most about this series is the remarkable passion, dedication and camaraderie at Cobourg fire,” said Johnston.

“From the chief down, across all divisions, (whether they’re) behind-the-scenes, out on a call or engaging the Cobourg community for fire prevention tips and public education, this department has a first-class team. (They are) constantly elevating their skills day-and-night to keep Cobourg safe,” said Johnston.

Each episode of the series is about 10 minutes long and features “immersive” storytelling and first-hand accounts from emergency responders. The series also explores the history of the Cobourg Fire Department.

“It was both humbling and inspiring to hear firsthand stories from the frontlines,” noted Johnston. “The personal accounts of sacrifice, resilience and service have created a powerful and memorable series.”

Johnston said the inspiration for the project hailed from Cobourg Fire Department Chief Ellard Beaven. “Chief (Beaven), who I met during a public service announcement production here in town, spoke so highly of his team at Cobourg fire.”

The chief offered to open the doors for the production, which led to the new series for Bell Fibe TV1.

“I am deeply grateful to him,” said Johnston.

The series offers a deeper look at what it means to serve in the fire sector, explores what inspires first-responders to answer the call, the diverse divisions within a fire service, and the steadfast commitment to community that defines their work.

“We are incredibly proud of Cobourg Fire (Department) and the essential role they play in keeping our community safe,” said Town of Cobourg CAO Tracey Vaughan.

“We welcome this new docu-series as an opportunity to highlight the professionalism and dedication of the department and to recognize the important work carried out by its members each day.”

In addition to seeing land and water training in action, viewers will also learn about the new Canadian Fire Fighters Museum in Cobourg, see tributes to fallen responders, garner fire prevention tips, collect information about how to create their own emergency preparedness kits, and more.
