Hospital beds hit the track in new BCHS Foundation fundraiser

The Brant Community Healthcare System Foundation is putting a creative spin on community fundraising with the launch of its inaugural Hospital Bed Races, a high-energy event aimed at supporting patient care in the region.

Set for Saturday, May 23 at the Branlyn Community Centre, the event will see teams of four race hospital beds in short sprints, combining speed, teamwork and themed costumes in a bid to raise $225,000 for new patient beds at the Brant Community Healthcare System.

Sara Hohenadel, development coordinator of annual giving with the foundation, said the idea was rooted in finding a fresh way to engage the community while staying connected to the organization’s core mission.

“We really wanted to create something that felt fresh, fun, and brought people together in a way that you don’t see every day,” she said. “The Hospital Bed Races came from that mindset, how do we take something that’s such a core part of the hospital experience, like a patient bed, and turn it into something interactive, high-energy, and memorable? It’s a little unexpected, a little playful, but still deeply connected to our mission.” Funds raised through pledges and team participation will go directly toward replacing aging patient beds, a need Hohenadel said is both urgent and essential.

“Many beds are reaching end of life, and so this event will support the Foundation to replace those beds ensuring the community’s rallied support will help provide the best possible experience for patients and support our clinical teams with the tools they need,” she said. “Patient beds might not always be the most top-of-mind piece of equipment, but they are used every single day, by every patient who comes through the hospital.”

Race day promises more than just competition. Alongside qualifying heats and final races, attendees can expect music, an emcee, food trucks and sponsor displays, creating what organizers hope will be a lively, festival-like atmosphere.

“It’s going to be a really fun, high-energy day,” said Hohenadel. “Even if you’re not racing, it’s a great opportunity to come out and support the teams.”

Organizers are encouraging participants to embrace creativity, with awards planned for fastest team, top fundraiser and best costume or theme. 

The goal, Hohenadel added, is to foster a lighthearted but meaningful sense of community.

“We want it to feel lighthearted, inclusive, and full of energy,” she said, noting that teams are expected from across the community, including local businesses, community groups and hospital staff.

“We’re really hoping to see a mix of local businesses, community groups, and BCHS staff involved. This day really isn’t just for one group.” 

Teams are asked to raise a minimum of $500 and can register online through the foundation’s website. Each group will receive its own fundraising page, with organizers encouraging early sign-up to allow time for planning and outreach.

“Racing Hospital beds for Hospital Beds!” Hohenadel said. “It’s about creating that shared sense of pride and connection, knowing that everyone is contributing to something that directly impacts patient care locally.”
