As the Royal Canadian Legion Branch 109 in Goderich celebrates its 100th anniversary, organizers are preparing to bring a piece of history to life with a unique community event this summer.
The Legion's "We'll Meet Again" Centenary Gala, taking place July 17, will transform the Branch into a 1940s-inspired dance hall, complete with live swing music, vintage décor, wartime memorabilia, and period-inspired fashions.
The event is one of several initiatives marking the Legion's centennial year. While the national Royal Canadian Legion was founded in 1926, Branch 109 has served the Goderich community since 1946, supporting veterans, their families, and countless local organizations and charitable causes.
The goal is to celebrate not only the history of the Legion, but also the people who have shaped it over the past century. This event is designed to bring generations together and create an experience that honours the past while celebrating the future.
Guests will enjoy live music by the Lighthouse Swing Band Orchestra, vintage displays, historical exhibits, and a special presentation by local historian David Yates, who will share stories and insights from the wartime era and the Legion's place within the community.
Organizers have also encouraged attendees to embrace the theme by wearing 1940s-inspired attire, helping to recreate the atmosphere of the dance halls and community gatherings that were so important during and after the Second World War.
The gala has generated significant interest from both Legion members and the wider community, reflecting the enduring role the organization continues to play in Goderich and across Canada.
As Branch 109 enters its second century of service, the event offers an opportunity to reflect on a legacy of remembrance, volunteerism, and community connection while creating new memories for future generations.
